| Abstract: | This paper proposes a sensor-less motor starting of a permanent magnet generator in a 5.7kW wind turbine system connected to the grid with a backward very sparse matrix converter which has bidirectional power flow capability. The starting strategy follows this scenario: The controller monitors the generator stator voltage and its angle then estimates the rotor speed from the stator voltage space vector angle. Initially, the controller disconnects the generator from the converter. When the turbine is detected in motion, the controller produces torque in the same direction as the aerodynamic torque on the turbine which in turn accelerates the turbine more quickly (motoring mode) until the rotor speed reaches 60% of its rated speed in order to produces more energy beside the simplicity and the feasibility of practical implementation. When the rotor speed reaches to that speed, the maximum power point tracking control algorithm takes over the control and switch from motoring mode to generating mode and force the turbine to run at its optimal tip speed ratio. Interestingly, the overall result is that more energy is delivered to the grid by short-term motoring than in the case where the turbine is accelerated aerodynamically without motoring. In the proposed system, the very sparse matrix converter controls the generator torque through field orientation where d-axis current is set to zero while the q-axis current is used to control the generator torque and thus control the turbine speed in both motoring and generating modes. The switching signals of the converter are formed based on the principle of space vector modulation.
